WCC Road Time Trial Results - TT#4 - Record Broken!
Waterloo Cycling Club Road Time Trial Results - TT#4
Location: Crowsfoot - 14 km out and back (Although there has been some debate on the exact distance ... more to come on this in the future...)
Date: July 29, 2010
Conditions: 23 oC, Humidity 48%, Wind N/NW 18 km/hr
It was a beautiful night for a ride and great conditions for a TT, however; there were few participants - only seven? Hopefully those not TT-ing were saving their legs for the Club Championships on August 19, 2010... I am expecting a big turn out and some fast times for the last ride of the year! Start that mental prep work and get your game faces on ...
Although there were few riders out - the times were fast, and I believe there were a number of season best and personal best times set - awesome! Especially fast was Melissa Bunn, who broke not only her sb and pb, but the women's course record of 20 minutes and 01 second, by 6 seconds, with a time of 19 minutes and 55 seconds! WAY TO GO MELISSA! APPLAUSE APPLAUSE!!! Melissa is the first woman to break the 20 minute barrier for this course! I expect to see this time continue to drop in the years to come... let's go ladies!
Rider Time (min:secs) Pace (km/hr)
1. John Stewart* 18:29 45.4
2. Melissa Bunn* 19:55 42.2 - NEW WOMEN's COURSE RECORD!!!!!
3. Ray Vander Veen* 19:57 42.1
4. Aaron Grant 20:53 40.2
5. Gary Cluett 21:29 39.1
6. Joel Rose 21:50 38.5
7. Mike Charland 22:13 37.8
Notes: *Denotes TT Gear used.
Yeah, blame the questionable distance on me.
I went out two time trials ago with some spray paint, and repainted over an X on the telephone pole, and put a turn around arrow on the road beside it.
This was at 6.7 kms on my GPS. I think the old X on the pole made me think it was the right spot
Apparently this was a little further than the previous TA, which was at a different pole. Did it too quickly, my bad
Sorry for making it longer, I know that people would probably prefer consistency over the longer distance.
I guess as a punishment people can throw thier energy gels at me at the next one......... just keep it outta my hair ;)

I'll volunteer to help in whatever way the WCC admin sees fit. Probably don't need a committee to measure out a distance. But at the very least, I could buy another can of orange spray paint and bring it to the next TT. ;-) A 6-inch "Dot" (in the middle of the road) with an arrow going around it would be an alternative to mark the exact turn-around point.
I've only done 3 of the 4 TT's this year. In all cases we started at the yellow line. You can see it painted on the road in front of Caroline in the 3rd picture down from the July 8 TT link... http://waterloocyclingclub.ca/node/1231 And everyone was lunging at the end for that faded white finish line in the 7th picture.
The turn around is a different story. On May 27 there was someone at the turn around point with a plastic cup at the side of the road marking the turn-point. As you will see below, it appears to have been short. On June 17 and July 8, we were told to turn at the last telephone pole before the stop sign...it would have a white X painted on it. It did, and that was easy to see and do. Pass the pole...turn around.
I happened to wear my Garmin GPS unit for the three TT's above. I've calibrated it with other GPS's and other cycling devices. It's fairly accurate. Here are the distances it recorded for the TT's.
May 27: 13.41 km (random plastic cup marking the turn-point)
June 17: 13.63 km (telephone pole with painted X as the turn-point)
July 8: 13.63 km (telephone pole with painted X as the turn-point)
Anyone else have distance data to compare?
Alain
I've rode on June 17th only this year. I followed the instructions to turn at the last phone pole before the stop sign. My garmin recorded a distance of 13.67km, that's with a wheel sensor and confirmed with my download onto a GPS based website.
Having an actual visual marker on the road would be ideal. The Hamilton CC has 5inch circles marked on the centre of the road at the turn around for both their short TT courses. Makes being honest a lot easier.

thought the distance was already figured out.....like years ago? been doing this t.t. since 1997 and I THINK i know where the turnaround is by now.....god knows it wasnt right when we first started, but i thought that it was finally figured out with the correct measuring devices some years ago?? lets remeasure and spray paint it in HUGE markings!!!! right, center and left of road for all to see.....super neon orange or something? kinda crappy when someone goes fast, or the group in mass, and after its suggested, "well, the course is kinda suspect..." lets hammer out the correct distance.....everyone needs it!!
