Just a quick thanks to WCC for setting up these rides. I'm really enjoying myself and can see the improvement week to week.

Also, looks like there was a bit of a tumble last night at the start of the way back on Hessen Strasse.

Everyone okay?

What happened?

Hi Jerry

I rode in group 2/3 on Tuesday and when we came around the corner I was last in the group with the wind at our back I was expecting the pace to quicken from about 45km/h to I was thinking between 55 and 60. So I reached down with my right arm to get a drink. Then the group in front started slowing down and I first thought they were going to speed backup, nope. Then I looked left but the rate I was going would have made me hit the rider on the left, so I went right, of course still holding on to the water bottle. Then I was on the gravel doing about 45km/h. Then I remember sliding shoulder first on the ground. And finally sitting up at the end. I should've just dropped the water bottle, or used my left arm to drink.

A special thx goes out to Brian for getting my truck, and my good friend from work Bart for driving me home to pick up my wife and staying with us at the hospital. Also a big thanks for everyone who stayed with me after I crashed and everyone who stopped by.

So we arrived at emergency at 8:30pm, signed in, saw the nurse, then waited for a room until 12:30. Then was poked and proded a bit to determine the extent of the injury. I was given a shot of TD to help with the pain, after that a couple of x-rays on my shoulder, then some cream was put on my road rash to numb the skin, then that was cleaned, and bandaged. Left at 2:30am.

Today I went to the hospital to see the surgeon, of course after the three hour wait. And I have been told that I will have the sling on for 6 weeks. Also the surgeon recommended the exogen bone healing system by smith&nephew, anybody have any experience with this product?

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated for dealing with the injury would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mike,

Just wanted to share Alain's condolences on the accident. That's terrible luck. I'm just hoping you have a successful recovery and are back as soon as feasible, devouring the hills like you do so well! You'll be missed by all who've had the pleasure of riding with you!

Best,

Scott

Horrible luck, but I know the feeling. During my last road race of the season in October of 93 in Westlake Ohio, my front wheel was swept in the sprint finish. Road rash on both knees, all of left thigh and arm, chain ring indentations in the back of the helmet and a broken right collar bone.

I had Exogen done at the sport clinic that used to be next to the gas station at Columbia and Phillip (this was back in 93, so I don't know where it is now).

Trust me, anything that will get you out of a figure 8 brace (they don't really use that anymore) quicker, you'll take. You just go in and have a seat and they move this block like thingy over the area affected and flip it on for about 20 minutes. You do this every few days iirc. You don't feel anything.

It's all in the past now, but the only sucky thing is my shoulders aren't even. I would have preferred a cool scar or something.

Get a stationary trainer and try to keep in shape is all I can say (ride it upright though....no weight on arms). You might get a few group rides in October depending on what doctor says).
