WCC Newsletter - September 2011

Happy Labour Day from the Waterloo Cycling Club.  We've still got a lot to look forward to after a record riding summer.  Please have a look through the following upcoming events and notifications.

Trail Funday - Sunday September 25th

It's that time of year! Come on out to the WCC's 2nd annual Trail Funday! Join us Sunday Sept 25 from 11-3 at the Glasgow parking area. This year we have unprecedented participation from all your favorite bike shops who have been working hard to round up excellent raffle prizes and mountain bike swag!  Don't forget the bikes -- factory  bikes from major manufactures will be available to test ride (more information to follow) so bring your shoes and helmet!

King Street Cycles will once again be firing up the grill so bring your appetite!

Now as much fun as it is to celebrate our trails, let's not forget the purpose of Funday --all proceeds go to the trail fund. Our local bike shops have offered generous support, but they can't do it alone so don't forget to bring cash or your chequebook to donate.  Funds raised keep projects afloat, and maintain this special place we can be proud to call our "home trails."

More info to follow -- stay tuned!

Trail Work During 2011

Although we haven't had an official trail day all year, there has been alot of work going on behind the scenes.  The big project for the year is the new boardwalk on Stinky Girl.  This isn't just a new boardwalk though, this change routes the trail further into the woods for an awesome ride experience.  This improvement is being funded from a Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, but it's the hard work of a dedicated individuals who are making this happen.

Another big project is a sea-can for the Glasgow parking lot.  This project was much more difficult than anyone first anticipated because of it's location (under hydro lines and on region property) but we believe the actual ground work will begin within the next month.

Lastly, we've used our trail worker email list successfully three times this year.  In as little as 8 hours notice for the last one, we were able to create work parties for tree removal.  We'll continue to use this for smaller adhoc projects and reserve trail days for bigger maintenance items.  Thanks for all those who participated and have provided their email addresses to the list.  If you are interested in getting on this list, please send an email to trails@waterloocyclingclub.ca asking to join the worker email list.  There's no obligation to come out if you are added to the list; you'll just get the email whenever we are trying to form a work party.  You just reply to that if you can attend.

Please Don't Ride in the Mud

We've had a nice dry summer and this hasn't been a problem for months (until this week).  99% of us know how riding in the mud damages the trails.  Alot of work goes into filling potholes and repairing damage cause by the few people who don't get understand what they are doing.  If you hear of anyone riding in muddy conditions, please pass this message onto them and invite them to help with trail maintenance so they see it from another perspective.  Even signing up to the website get's them this annoying message every once and a while :) and they might come around.

Ride Time Changes

All evening Road Rides (Tues, Wed and Thurs) will be starting at 6:00 after labour day.  (THAT'S THIS WEEK!!!).  This change does not affect MTB rides.  The MTB rides will eventually consolidate into one weekly night ride, so keep an eye on the MTB ride pages for more information.

Fall Touring Rides Offer Fun and Diversity

Novice and experienced riders alike are invited to participate in the last two WCC recreational touring rides of the 2011 cycling season.   On September 11th, the group will be riding from Brantford to Scotland, Ontario and back along the Brantford to Port Dover Trail.  Then, on September 18th, the group will ride the Elora Cataract Trail, from Elora to Bellwood and back.  Both trail routes are well maintained and constructed along former rail lines.  As such, they are fun and easy to navigate and transect some of the most scenic and diverse landscapes Ontario has to offer.  For more information on the recreational touring rides, including staging locations and meeting times, please consult the Touring Rides section of the WCC website.
