Spring trail riding

The spring weather has arrived early this year which has raised spirits and encouraged riders to get out on their bikes. Unfortunately this is also the time of year when most of the trail damage occurs. At this time the trails will be wet and the hard packed soil will be loose from the frost. These conditions allow tires to cut into the trail causing serious damage. I would like to ask all riders to be very careful when you ride our trails this spring. If you would like to ride now I would suggest that you ride early in the day when the trails are frozen. Plan to be out by 9 or when the temperature gets above freezing. This is a great time for some spring road training which will prepare you for a strong riding season.

Ron, it has already begun, as it always seems too. It's sad that while on a road ride last night, while it was good and warm, I observed two riders heading into the WCC trails. I wonder if they'll be showing up for trail maintenance days. Grrrrrrr.

I went for a hike at the Pines this afternoon (Thursday). Its getting there, about 80% dry (very tempting). But there are still some goopy sections from melting snow and ice that already have ruts from inconsiderate riders. The trails will probably be stable next week. Patience and we will all be rewarded with smooth trails this summer.
