To grow the Waterloo Cycling Club's presence in the Ontario race scene (and beyond) we are changing our focus from organizing our own race program to becoming a primary sponsor of Waterloo Region's new premier race program - Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club.

The Waterloo Cycling Club has been growing tremendously over the last number of years. This exciting step is recognition of that growth and the important role we play for cycling in the Region and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ

Q: Will Waterloo Cycling Club have a role in managing the race team?

A: Yes.  Waterloo Cycling Club will no longer be organizing it’s own race program, but our partnership agreement includes a seat on the Management Committee for Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club.  The Management Committee will be formed by Vance Lai and Mark Weymouth (Race Director for Waterloo Cycling Club).

Q: Who can join Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club?

A: Any members of the Waterloo Cycling Club can join Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club.  In fact, a requirement to a member of Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club is that you are also a member of the Waterloo Cycling Club.

Q: Will there be sponsored and non-sponsored athletes?

A: Yes.  Just like Waterloo Cycling Club race team of the past there will be sponsored and non-sponsored athletes.

Q: I want to be a non-sponsored athlete; what do I do?

A: Apply as a non-sponsored athlete.  All applicants to Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club will be accepted.  All member of the team will be expected to follow the team code of conduct and meet the minimum race requirements.

Q: What are the requirements to be a non-sponsored athlete?

A: If you join Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club as a non-sponsored athlete you will be required to enter at least three events in your primary discipline.  Clothing for Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club will be sold at regular prices, but once the three event minimum has been met non-sponsored athletes will be reimbursed the difference between regular price and the cost price.

Q: How are sponsored athletes chosen and what does sponsorship include?

A: The application process will enable you to indicate you wish to be considered for sponsorship.  The decision of who will be sponsored and the funding they will receive is up to the sole discretion of the Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club Management Committee.

Q: Are there volunteer requirements if I’m chosen as a sponsored athlete?

A: Yes, each sponsored athlete will be required to give 15 volunteer hours back to the Waterloo Cycling Club in our RIDE and LEAD programs.  This has been a core value proposition for our RACE program in the past and we are proud to continue with this approach.

Q: Will there be different kits between Waterloo Cycling Club and Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club?

A: Yes.  Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club will have a unique kit.  We have agreed that the Waterloo Cycling Club logo will appear on the side panels of the jersey and rear of the shorts.   The Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club kit will be available for members to purchase if they would like and clothing for both the club and race team will be supplied by the same vendor.

Q: What disciplines will Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club race?

A: Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club will focus on Road, XC MTB and CX.

Q: Will this change result in the race team riding separately from the club?

A: No.  In fact, this change is designed to create more club rides and opportunities for all.  All Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club team members must also be Waterloo Cycling Club members.  We have agreed that Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club will take part in existing club rides and where an official ride doesn’t exists (for example: Crit Training) the Waterloo Cycling Club will create a new official activity.  Of course we all ride outside of official club activities on an ad-hoc basis and that will continue, but the goal is to make any recurring activities official club activities.

Q: I’m not sure about my racing plans for this year.  If I don’t join Faction Racing p/b Waterloo Cycling Club can I still race as Waterloo Cycling Club in the WCC kit.

A: Yes.  You can still register your license or for one day permits/events as Waterloo Cycling Club.  There are many members that will be doing this to try out a race like CX, enter endurance MTB events or for Fondos.  You can also choose to race under WCC if that is your personal preference, or you are not sure if you can commit to the minimum number of events required of non-sponsored Faction athletes.
